NORFOLK—Military veterans continue to experience a higher rate of unemployment than the population at large, with the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing the jobless rate for veterans is 9.9 percent, compared to 8.3 percent overall.

With that in mind, the City of Norfolk and the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Veterans Services partnered to bring employers and job-seekers together.

Fifteen companies and more than 300 applicants participated in a jobs fair at Scope Monday.  The idea is to marry specific military skill sets with open positions at firms seeking veterans.

“It’s extremely tough, especially the younger vets who might not have that experience in the workforce to go out and seek those opportunities,” said former Army soldier David Saldivias, a two time veteran of the Iraq war. “So, something like this, I think, is really good for the area and the younger soldiers and service members.”
