WASHINGTON, D.C.--Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel Wednesday called the commanding officer of the Norfolk based, USS Barry, which is still on patrol in the eastern Mediterranean.
The secretary expressed his gratitude to the sailors of the guided missile destroyer through their commander, Cmdr. Thomas Dickenson.
Last month, the USS Barry was ordered to remain at sea beyond their scheduled deployment in preparation for military action against the Syrian regime.
According to a Department of Defense release, Hagel "asked Commander Dickinson to relay to all sailors aboard that on the anniversary of Sept. 11, the secretary is proud of the men and women of the U.S. Navy who safeguard our nation far from home."
The USS Mahan which was on patrol with the Barry during the height of the Syrian crisis will be arriving in Norfolk on Friday.
