UPDATE 1/6:  Over 1200 volunteers across the Commonwealth completed 3662.5 hours of service at 80 community events.

RICHMOND (AP) -- Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe is asking Virginians to spend a day helping their communities.

McAuliffe's inaugural events include a day of service on Jan. 4. The inauguration website, Inauguration2014.com, lists opportunities across Virginia that are searchable by ZIP code.

McAuliffe tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he's trying to convey the theme of common good.

McAuliffe and the Inaugural Committee has also invited Virginia veterans, military members, and their families, free of charge, to the Hampton Roads Inaugural Ball on Sunday, January 5 at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Norfolk.

Virginia veterans, military members, and their families interested in attending must email military@inauguration2014.com with their name, branch and rank in military or previous branch and rank, number of tickets to reserve, and best phone number. The Inaugural Committee will reach out to those who RSVP through email with further details.

McAuliffe, Lt. Gov.-elect Ralph S. Northam and Attorney General-elect Mark R. Herring will take the oath of office on Jan. 11.
