Coast Guard performs early morning medevac of cruise ship passenger

PORTSMOUTH, VA — An 81 year-old man was medevaced from a cruise ship off the coast of North Carolina earlt Saturday morning after the captain contacted the U.S. Coast Guard 5th District Command Center, reporting that the man was apparently suffering from a heart attack.

According to a news release, the Norwegian Breakaway, a 1,063-foot cruise ship, was approximately 55 miles southwest of Cape Hatteras when the call was received. CG watchstanders dispatched a crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to assist.

Once on scene, the Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the man into the helicopter and took him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk.

The man is reported to be in stable condition.
