Coast Guard suspends search for boater

PORTSMOUTH —The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for a man who reportedly fell from a 39-foot boat into the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina on Sunday.

A motorist driving over the Highway 32 bridge at around 11:30 a.m. saw a person fall overboard and contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders, reporting that the boater needed assistance.

An urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) was issued the the Coast Guard dispatched crews aboard a 25-foot Response Boat  from Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City, N.C., and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City to search for the man.

Someone found a 39-foot boat anchored with a dog on it alone.

The Coast Guard said “good Samaritans” also responded to assist in the search, as well as a boat from Chowan County Marine Police.
