VIRGINIA BEACH -- There's a special ceremony Wednesday afternoon to commemorate 72nd anniversary of The Battle of Midway.

The Battle of Midway took place June 4-7, 1942, where U.S. Navy carrier strike forces prevented the Japanese from capturing control of Midway Island in the Pacific.

Historians say the battle was a pivotal point of World War II and is an important marker in naval heritage.

NAS Oceana will host the 2 p.m. ceremony at Naval Aviation Monument Park, 25th Street and Atlantic Avenue at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront.  Retired Naval Aviator Capt. Kent Ewing will be the guest speaker. Mayor Will Sessoms  and Jim Spruance, distant relative to Admiral Ray Spruance, are expected to attend.
