YORK COUNTY -- Residents in York County are being warned about a new scam involving donations to the sheriff's office.
According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Facebook page, a resident was contacted by an unknown caller who said they would be given a warning for a recent traffic infraction but they would like a $75 donation.
Citizens are never contacted by the sheriff's office asking for donations, officials said.
"Sometimes a deputy may call you to speak about a crime in progress or a past crime, but they will always give you their rank, name and a contact number associated with the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office. This can always be verified by contacted our communications center at 757-890-3621," officials posted.
If it sounds too good to be true, they say, it is.
