Three students face expulsion over protest

Three Hampton University students face expulsion for handing out flyers that the university didn’t approve. They also coordinated a classroom walkout in protest of the Bush Administration. Mark Bennett says he was among those passing out the ‘Drive Out Bush Regime’ flyers and spreading the word about a protest gathering. But then campus police showed up. "We were handing out flyers and lots of police took a lot of student I-D's and was threatening to kick them off campus and to expel them because of this." Hampton University’s code of conduct says peaceful, non-violent demonstrations are allowed on campus as long as permission has been given. Each student much sign it. Therein lays the problem, explained fellow student Aaron Williams. "If they're going to practice their freedom of speech, they have to have permission.” Another student, Jonathan Hickson, countered, "If you're going to peacefully assembly, I don't see any point in you being penalized for that or getting in trouble for that." The anti-Bush campaign is part of a national effort with the slogan, "Drive out the Bush Regime because the world can’t wait” Bennett explained why he’s part of the effort. "They can send you to Iraq in a quick second. But, they can't send you to New Orleans when they needed it, so it's like his views are messed up." There will be a hearing to decide any discipline for the students accused of violating the university’s code of conduct.
