Fire boat named after Hampton Roads hero
06:03 PM EDT on Wednesday, October 24, 2007
Wednesday, the Newport News Fire Department dedicated its new fire boat, named after a local hero.
The name of the boat is "Carl Brashear," which is also the name of the first African-Americal Navy diver in U.S. history.
Master Chief Brashear's life of courage, strength and dedication to duty was captured in the movie, "Men of Honor," and the fire department says his legacy is the perfect fit for the new, cutting-edge fire boat.
Brashear's family helped dedicate the boat in Newport News, Wednesday.
"It's a great cast, and he'd be very proud," said Brashear's son, Dawayne. "It's important to us, because we can brag about it, but it's important for other people because it's a legacy that can spur their learning about my dad and his life."
A grant from the Department of Homeland Security and help from the Va. Port Authority and the Va. Department of Fire Programs helped pay for the $400,000 vessel.
