Attempted abduction suspect turns self in
06:30 PM EDT on Monday, October 22, 2007
The man wanted for trying to abduct an eight-year-old girl from Granby High School in Norfolk last week surrendered Monday afternoon.
Police say 22-year old Andrew Truelove grabbed the girl by her backpack as she was standing near one of the school's athletic fields on Thursday.
Witnesses said he left in a white Kia Sportage SUV and was waving a crowbar and screaming at the time of the attack.
In an affidavit, Truelove says he wasn't trying to steal a child, but beat up a bully.
"Stepped on the field and shoulted very loudly, words to the effect, 'Are there any bullies around here? If anyone feels bullied, please come to me and I will deal with the bullies,'" the affidavit read.
Truelove says he's been seeing a psychiatrist, and is obsessed with bullying after he experienced it first hand.
He wrote, "I believed (it may be irrationally) that such bullying (Norfolk Collegiate School) might be a cause for my behavior difficulties over the last three years. However, the allegation of abduction was and is totally false."
The suspect's father says Truelove wanted to consult an attorney before surrendering to police.
The Pilot reports that his father released a statement from Truelove assuring police he was not trying to harm the girl or anyone but wanted to quote "deal with the bullies."
