Union workers for Ford suppliers worried about their future

04:52 PM EDT on Monday, October 16, 2006

Reported by: Lindsey Roberts

Union employees for Ford Motor Company have until the end of November to choose one of several buyout packages as the company moves ahead with its Way Forward plan.

When the Norfolk Assembly Plant closes in the third quarter of 2007, many workers who work for companies that supply the plant will lose their jobs, too.

They are members of the UAW Local 919, but the Ford buyout plans don’t cover them.

So, the 60 or so employees at Visteon know that their job goes away when the plant closes.

"It's kind of bleak for us and unless we do get this buyout package, we are pretty much out there on our own," said Lisa Higgons.

Many of them say the union’s fought for the Ford employees, but not for them.

"We are the same brother and sister type organization and I feel like they owe us more than they are giving us,” added Ray Crivaro.

"I pay maybe $40 a month and all I'm getting out of it is a magazine and a union card," Antonio Yarbor scoffed.

Darnell Young added, "It kills you on the inside because you pay the same money. You expect the respect they get over there and we don't feel like we are getting it."

The union also covers workers at Johnson Controls and TDS.

UAW Local 919 President Chris Kimmons said the union is fighting.

"We are doing all we can for them until we get notice from the companies that they are going to close down. Then, as I said, we will sit down with the company and get to work with them."

Kimmons says some buyout talks are already underway - behind closed doors.  But he notes that because they are smaller companies, he doubts whether the buyout packages will be anything like the Ford offers.
