Locals walk to remember 9/11, celebrate freedom
11:21 PM EDT on Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Across the nation, and in Hampton Roads, people came together to remember those killed in 9/11 and honor those who fight for freedom.
In Chesapeake, a freedom walk was held, and with every step, the participants remembered friends who died in the attack on 9/11.
"It's just real hard to deal with hard to grasp,” said Michelle Pauline. “I mean, I knew a lot of people, you know."
The walkers also remembered heroes who died in the rescue effort.
“It's quite a traumatic experience,” said Robert Banach. “I'll never forget, will never forget where I was the day it happened even to this day. That's why I'm here today.”
They also remembered those killed with defending our country, and those still fighting today.
"That we support our troops and all the other folks that work to keep us safe,” said Debbi Wesley.
They understand the cost of freedom, and understand that they’re here to enjoy the benefits, because someone else is not.
"As life goes on, things come up and we get our busy lives,” said Wesley. “But we need to take the time out."
“They gave their lives for others, so I'm proud of them for what they did, but again, I'll never forget it,” said Banach. “I'll never let it go whether it's 6 years, 10 years, or 20 years from now."
Last year, 800 participated. This year, that number fell to 200. However, the people who came out say the important thing is that they took the time to reflect.
