Judge reviews competency of woman charged with trying to abduct baby
03:32 PM EDT on Monday, August 27, 2007
A woman charged with trying to take a two-day-old baby from the hospital last month is competent to stand trial, a Norfolk judge ruled Monday.
Norfolk Police say Shameka Pittman, 21, posed as a nurse and tried to walk out of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with the little boy on July 20th.
Authorities say she didn't get far because staff noticed the child was missing. The baby wasn’t hurt.
According to Amanda Howie with the Norfolk Commonwealth's Attorney office, the judge reviewed a mental health evaluation hearing that was requested by Pittman's attorney.
Pittman, of Hampton, remains in the Norfolk City Jail without bond on an abduction charge.
Her preliminary hearing is set for late next month.
The judge cited concerns for the safety of other children as the reason for denying bond.
According to Howie, the judge set a preliminary hearing in the case for September 11th.
