RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Beginning Wednesday, Virginia transportation officials will re-inspect 11 deck-truss structures across the state, including the Coleman Bridge over the York River that connects Gloucester and Yorktown, ensuring their safety in light of Minnesota's recent bridge collapse.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will keep the public updated on progress through a newly launched Web site.

Officials with VDOT and the Federal Highway Administration reviewed inspection records for all structures in the commonwealth following the Aug. 1 collapse of a Minneapolis bridge that killed at least nine.

States have been instructed to inspect all steel-deck truss bridges similar to the one that collapsed. There are approximately 700 such spans, according to the U.S. Transportation Department.

Engineers determined 12 of the commonwealth's 20,000 structures feature deck-truss design elements, and all have been inspected within the last two years, VDOT said.

Eleven of them will be re-examined in the latest round of inspections, to be completed by mid-September. The Route 100 bridge over the New River in Wythe County already is being replaced and won't be inspected.

VDOT Commissioner David Ekern said officials want to err on the side of caution.

"The bridge collapse in Minnesota is a tragedy that reminds us that there is no more important priority than the safety of our roadways and bridges," he said. "Work is already under way to replace four of the 12 deck-truss bridges we have in Virginia."
