PETA says Norfolk Animal Shelter still in trouble

06:50 PM EDT on Wednesday, June 27, 2007

A month ago the Norfolk Animal Shelter came under fire from the state, and now PETA says things are not improving.

After numerous complaints from customers, the state investigated the shelter, saying it had “inadequate conditions.”

Six weeks ago a state inspector made a list of violations: sick animals housed near healthy ones, improper euthanasia procedures, animals living in their own waste.

Earlier this month our cameras saw a different picture: clean cages, healthy animals; but PETA says the shelter still has plenty of problems.

“For the animals that are there now, the improvements make no difference because they are languishing in their cages as we speak,” said PETA worker Daphna Nachminovitch who visited the shelter this weekend. “There's just a lack of very basic supplies. It's apparent that hte workser are overwhelmed. I think that part of the reason for that is there is no system in place for basic operational things.”

She videotaped a coughing dog and took pictures of other sick animals in crates.

“This kitten was dying in his litter pan, was cold to the touch and barely breathing,” she said, regarding the photo.

After seeing the pictures snapped by PETA cameras, the Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim asked for a meeting with shelter staff on Friday.

“We're making some progress but we still have a lot to do,” said Fraim.

A 13News investigation earlier this month showed the problems at the shelter date all the way back to 2005.

An assistant city manager is the interim manager of the shelter while the city looks to hire a professional animal worker. She did not return calls or allow access to the shelter Wednesday.
