Sailboat hits power line, catches fire
05:40 PM EDT on Monday, June 25, 2007
A sailboat caught fire and exploded when its mast got tangled in high voltage power lines Sunday afternoon.
“At first, he didn't realize what happened and another boat passing by told him he hit the overhead power line," said Mary Thompson, who saw smoke rising from the 28-foot boat.
The boater was sailing the intracoastal waterway from Florida to Pennsylvania when, near the Gilmerton Bridge, he made a wrong turn into St. Juliens Creek.
Jason Stanley got on his jet ski and rescued him. Luckily, he got the man off the boat before the fire hit the gas tank and exploded.
"You just gotta do what you gotta do. When somebody's in trouble, you can't think about it."
Stanley said he rescued a boater in a similar situation several years ago.
