Hampton Roads soldier helps stop attack on soldiers in Iraq
11:07 PM EDT on Monday, June 11, 2007
A Chesapeake soldier has been credited with helping prevent an attack in Iraq that could have taken soldiers’ lives.
"The email just said, 'Good news,' and that he and a Specialist Rork had stopped a dump truck with 8,000 pounds of explosives,” said Penny Osgood.
She received the message from her son, Specialist Charles Osgood, who is in Iraq. The 26-year-old has been credited with helping prevent an attack on Patrol Base Warrior Keep.
A soldier noticed a man with a truck filled with explosives. In addition to the truck, the driver wore a vest that was loaded with explosives. The soldier and Osgood opened fire on the truck, saving the lives of countless Americans.
"Well, we're not a hero. I think Chuckie's the hero,” said John White, Osgood’s stepfather.
"The driver, evidently, tried to get away, and, uh, he was shot in the leg, and they were able to get him,” said Osgood’s mother. “First time a suicide bomber's been captured alive."
“They were blowing up the 8,000 pounds a little at a time, and he said they didn't have a window left in the facility,” said White. “You can just imagine if all of it had gone off at one time."
The incredible save comes less than a month after another attack on members of the 10th Mountain Division.
“Patrol truck that was ambushed, five or six people killed, an interpreter killed, and three soldiers kidnapped, that was their brigade,” said Osgood’s mother.
For that reason, she says the good news of Monday has those serving with the Army specialist pumped, as are she and her husband. She sent her son an email reply, telling him, “Good job.”
“Proud to be an American,” said White. “That's for sure."
Osgood's step-sister, Stephanie, also serves in the Army.
His family says they expect him to return to the U.S. in November.
