Waxing doesn't have to be taxing

06:48 AM EDT on Thursday, May 3, 2007

It’s nearly swimsuit season.

Before heading into the sand and surf, many women head to the salon to remove unwanted body hair.

Jennifer Ellsworth just had her first waxing – a traditional bikini wax - at Dimensions Hair Studio in Va. Beach.

However, waxing can be done anywhere there’s hair.

"They wax their toes, their legs, their arms. Some people wax their stomachs - wherever they have hair that they don't want it," said studio owner Gwen Lala.

Lala says there are several things you can do to make waxing less taxing.

-Stay out of the sun beforehand because it can make your skin more sensitive.

-Take ibuprofen about an hour before the appointment

-Avoid using chemicals and crèmes like Retin-A or glycholic acid.

Lala adds that all wax technicians must be licensed by the state, so look for the certificate.

She says you’ll see some redness after the waxing and some slight skin irritation that sort of feels like a Band Aid.

If you’re worried that hair will grow back thicker after waxing, Lala says it’s just not true.

"Over time, the hair will grow back less and less so you will actually have less hair growth in that area," she said assuringly.

Lala says waxing lasts longer than shaving and you don’t get that prickly hair re-growth.

She says many people bleach their hair, but of course, the hair isn’t removed, it’s just lightened.

If you’re a first time waxer, like Jennifer, you can schedule a consultation to see if waxing’s right for you. It is for Jennifer.

"Yeah, I'm gonna do this all the time now," she stated.
