Jewelers make old things new again
06:52 AM EDT on Friday, April 27, 2007
You might have a sentimental piece of jewelry or something passed down from generation to generation that just doesn’t fit your style.
You can give that treasure a makeover without spending a fortune.
"It's very, very common. I would say several times a day we have somebody that comes in that wants to uh, recycle a piece of jewelry,” said Donna Firestone, owner of Either Ore Strawbridge in Va. Beach.
It’s detailed work and takes times, but a skilled jeweler can work magic.
A ring guard was recreated as an eternity band.
Another customer wanted something new from her grandmother’s wedding set. There were enough stones to make three rings, using the diamonds and adding a garnet. Then, the remaining diamonds were put into a modern wedding set.
Firestone says some customers know what they want and recommends you scour the catalogs and look at other jewelry to get ideas.
"If there's nothing that suits your needs, or what you're looking for, we have designers out of New York we work very closely," she noted.
That's how Holly Blumenthal came to have a ring that was originally part of a bracelet.
"I held onto it for about ten years before I decided what to do with it. And then my mother made a beautiful wedding band, and my sister? I don't think she has used the stones yet," Blumental said.
“When the customer brings the pieces to us, they stay right here. We don't send anything out,” Firestone stressed, saying that’s something people do worry about.
If you have the stones, the possibilities are endless.

"It's a lot of fun. It's the most, probably the most fun part of my job," Firestone said.
Firestone says jewelry conversions can run from less than $50.00 to several thousand dollars
