NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly shooting his gun inside his home.

Police say 39-year-old Glen Wayne Loving was on the phone with his wife around 6 p.m., reportedly having a verbal argument, when he shot the weapon.

Police say Loving's two young children were also in the home, located in the 100 block of Watson Drive.

As the officers made contact with the suspect they detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage, police said.

Loving has been charged with discharging a firearm in a public place and reckless handling of a firearm and two counts of felony child neglect.

He is currently in custody at the Newport News City Jail.

Police say the children remain with their mother.
