DARE COUNTY, NC -- Plans for a wind farm project in Dare County are up for review.
Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC, wants to build up to three power-generating wind turbines within a three-mile square area within the Pamlico Sound in Dare County, N.C. It would be located about seven miles west of Avon and a little more than nine miles north of Frisco.
Power generated by this project would be supplied to the electric grid on Hatteras Island.
In 2008, the state General Assembly directed the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to study the feasibility of and capacity for wind energy generation within the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds and ocean waters along the North Carolina coast.
UNC-Chapel Hill will conduct research on the project to evaluate water user conflicts, ecological risks, engineering obstacles, and measures to mitigate the effects of the turbines on the public.
Comments about the project can be made at a scoping meeting on March 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Dare County Justice Center in Manteo.
They'll be used as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepares a Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the project.
