NEWPORT NEWS -- A stretch of Warwick Boulevard in Newport News is shut down due to an early morning accident.
Southbound Warwick Boulevard is closed at James River Drive, according to Newport News police spokesperson Holly McPherson. Northbound lanes are closed at Westover Road.
Morning commuters are asked to avoid the area as police conduct their investigation. No word on when the closure will be lifted.
Emergency crews received a call of a single vehicle accident at a pet supply store located in the 10000 block of Warwick Boulevard around 2:30 a.m. Monday.
When officers arrived on scene, they located a Toyota Corolla that had struck the business. The adult male driver was also located at the scene, McPherson said.
A preliminary investigation revealed the the suspect was driving southbound at Warwick Boulevard when he struck a utility pole at Brandon Road. The driver then continued down the road before losing control and eventually crashing into the store.
The driver was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police are trying to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role.
It may take several hours to repair the utility pole, McPherson said. So far, no power outages have been reported.
