VIRGINIA BEACH-Virginia Task Force 2 Urban Search and Rescue Team based in Virginia Beach is in New York City to help in the recovery from Hurricane Sandy.

According to the group's Facebook page, the unit received orders from FEMA to go to Queens, New York to join up with Maryland Task Force 1.

Task Force personnel received their first assignment Tuesday night to begin searches in Jamaica, NY.

Spokesman Battalion Chief Tim Riley said the team searched over 600 homes performing welfare checks to the citizens of Queens.

"While performing the checks, the team provided medical care to four citizens," he noted.

The team will move to search around Staten Island Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia Task Force 2 is part of the National Urban Search and Rescue System and is deployed by FEMA to any national emergency or disaster.

While in New York, VATF-2 is operating under a joint command system lead by the Special Operations Command of the Fire Department of New York and FEMA.
