VIRGINIA BEACH (AP) -- Virginia Beach is beginning to stir again as a weakened Hurricane Earl makes its way up the East Coast.
City officials said Friday evening activities at the American Music Festival at the Oceanfront were expected to go on as planned, although there was a slight delay for performances .
The 5th Street Main Stage schedule has been slightly adjusted because of Hurricane Earl to give crews and vendors adequate time for set-up once the winds subside.
New Schedule:
6:30 p.m., Doors Open
7:45 to 8:45 p.m., The Trammps
9 to 10 p.m., The Village People
10 to 11:15 p.m., Gloria Gaynor
The few businesses along Atlantic Avenue that boarded up windows were removing sheets of plywood early Friday as visitors began making their way down to the boardwalk and the roiling surf.
Joey and Kelly Berkemeier and their 2-year-old son Kyle walked along the surf's edge at 23rd Street as winds and rain pelted them.
The family drove 12 hours from Independence, Ky., Thursday for what was Kyle's first trip to the beach. Joey Berkemeier said the waves were the biggest he had ever seen.
Runners were out early preparing for a half-marathon scheduled on Sunday. More than 22,000 runners are expected to participate.
Carlos Duque sent in photos of a limb that was ripped from a tree on Scalotti Court Friday morning.
"It happened during a gust of wind this morning," he said.
