VIRGINIA BEACH--Virginia Beach Police say in 2012 the city saw the lowest violent crime and property crime rate since 1965.
The rate in 2012 for Part I crimes was 28.1 crimes per 1,000 residents.
Part I crimes include violent crimes like homicide, rape, robbery and assault, as well as property crimes, including burglary, larceny, vehicle theft and arson.
The total number of violent crimes went down from 777 in 2012 to 758 in 2012. Five years ago that number was 1,104.
The total number of property crimes went down from 12,211 in 2011 to 11,799 in 2012. Five years ago that number was 12,865.
The department says they cleared 65.2 percent of violent crime cases and 29.6 percent of property crime cases in 2012.
In 2012, Virginia Beach Police investigated the following violent crimes:
Homicide - 21
Forcible rape - 68
Robbery - 320
Aggravated assault - 349
Total violent crime - 758

Motor vehicle theft - 461
Arson - 119
