National Geographic calls Atlantic City "the grandfather of boardwalks," adding that it anchors the seaside gambling resort.
Also on the list are New York's Coney Island, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Ocean City, Md.; Venice Beach, Calif.; Rehoboth Beach, Del.; Santa Cruz, Calif.; the Sandwich boardwalk in Massachusetts; Virginia Beach and Wildwood, also in New Jersey.
"In our 2010 Summer Visitor Profile, this is one of the things our visitors like most about Virginia Beach. We are pleased when an important aspect of our destination, like our boardwalk, is ranked highly by an organization like National Geographic," Convention and Visitors Bureau spokeswoman Pam Lingle told WVEC.com.
National Geographic issued the listings in alphabetical order and did not intend to imply a numerical rank to each.
