10:20 a.m. UPDATE: State Police say 42-year-old Jeremiah Gibson III used an Authorized Vehicles Only crossover on I-64. He's charged with DUI, DUI habitual offender, felony count of eluding police, possession of marijuana, providing false information to law enforcement and failure to obey a highway sign.
Meanwhile, a state trooper's car collided with another car, causing a chain reaction crash, while responding to the pursuit. It happened at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard/Route 17 at Jefferson Avenue. The trooper's car had lights and sirens activated, authorities said. The trooper's car hit one car, and the impact forced the patrol car into a 2013 Mazda CX-9 that was stopped at the traffic light on J. Clyde Blvd. The driver of the LeSabre was treated for minor injuries at the scene; no other injuries reported.
The crash remains under investigation.

NEWPORT NEWS -- A State Trooper was hurt while chasing a man who bailed from his car early Friday.

Around 6 a.m., the trooper tried to pull over a driver on I-64 in Newport News, but the driver wouldn't stop, authorities said.

A pursuit ended when the driver got off at Jefferson Avenue (Exit 255) westbound and drove to Campbell Road, where he bailed out of the car and ran off , said spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The suspect was taken into custody a few minutes later, she added.

Charges are pending.

The trooper was taken to the hospital for treatment of a serious, but not life-threatening injury.

There was no immediate information about why the trooper was trying to pull over the driver.
