VIRGINIA BEACH -- About 80 members of a Virginia Beach-based Virginia National Guard unit left Tuesday for training and then duty in Afghanistan.
The 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group reported to the Sands Armory last weekend before deploying to Fort Hood, Texas, for training.
After 45-60 days in Texas, they'll deploy to Afghanistan.
Once in country, the unit will operate as a command and control headquarters. During the mission, the unit will plan and provide logistical support -- like maintenance, food service, fueling, personnel and cargo transportation and medical support -- for American and coalition forces.
The unit was notified of the deployment in January.
