SUFFOLK – The weekend forecast calls for lots of rain and a rain-snow mix across Hampton Roads.

VDOT says the trucks are ready to put down sand and salt on Interstates and primary roads when the snow begins.  Officials say they’ll begin plowing in areas where snow reaches two inches.

Southside is expected to get a lot of rain.

"The high tide could create flood conditions at the Midtown Tunnel, so crews have prepped the tide gate for potential closure if the tide reaches an unsafe level and threatens the facility," explained VDOT spokeswoman Lauren Hansen.

13News meteorologist Craig Moeller says tidal departures of about 3 to 3.5 feet above normal are projected. That would create a potential for minor to moderate flooding at Sewells Point at high tides overnight and Saturday. The high tide times 2:41 a.m. and 2:58 p.m.

Not wanting to get caught unprepared, there was a run on shovels and salt at Grafton True Value in York County.

"We ran out last week when we had all the snow," said Deana Laney. "We had about 160 of them (shovels) we'd had for five years and they went basically in one day."

Some people made a quick grocery run Friday afternoon.

"We're stocking up on fire logs and pizza," said Dick Barton.

"We're going to Rite Aid and a couple of other places to get some medication for families and elderly people who do not have the transportation and time to deal with weather and ice," added Thomas Beddingfield.

Northern and southwest Virginia and the Washington, DC areas are expecting to be slammed by the winter storm.

It’s already been a deadly day on the roads. Virginia State Police say a father and son were killed after being hit by a tractor-trailer.
They were trying to help someone who’d wrecked in snow on Interstate 81.
