NORFOLK -- More than 14,000 blood donations were canceled in January because of winter weather. The American Red Cross is encouraging people to donate after the latest round of snow clears.
According to American Red Cross spokeswoman Kristen Hatfield, all blood drives in Hampton Roads and Eastern North Carolina on Wednesday have been canceled.
"In the Mid-Atlantic Region for tomorrow and today, we are down close to 700 additional pints. We encourage people to come out after the snow clears and the roads are safe to donate," Hatfield wrote in a press release. "The need for blood never takes a day off, not even for a snow day."
Hatfield says there is an urgent need for O-, O+, B-, and A- blood.
Donors can make an appointment to donate at redcrossblood.org or 1-800-RED CROSS.
For platelet donations, appointments can be made by calling 757-623-4880.
