RALEIGH, NC -- It’s game day in Raleigh for the East Region's #1 seed Virginia Cavaliers. UVA will take #16 seed Coastal Carolina in second round NCAA Tournament action at PNC Arena.

It’s going to be a long wait for the Cavaliers and Chanticleers -- their game is one of the last on the tournament schedule with a 9:25 p.m. tipoff time.

It’s also been a long-time coming for Cavalier fans. It’s been 30 years since the ‘Hoos were a top seed in the NCAA tournament.  That 1983 team, led by Ralph Sampson, did not have a long stay in the tourney.

Long-time fans like 1961 UVA grad Russ Barber remember that team fondly but say this year’s team has a chance to do something really special.

“It’s exciting, you can hardly contain yourself,” he said while watching an open practice on Thursday.

Cavalier fans coming to Raleigh will gather for a pre-game pep rally and tailgate at Tobacco Road Sports Café, 222 Glenwood Ave. starting at 6:30 PM. That party is being hosted by the UVA Club of the Triangle. Members of the UVa Club of Tidewater are also expected to attend.
