NORFOLK -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) left Naval Station Norfolk Tuesday morning.

The crew will take part in a bilateral exercise with the Royal Norwegian Navy before joining the U.S. 6th Fleet flagship USS Mount Whitney for exercise Baltic Operations 2014 and the events commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Crewmembers say they're excited about going to a part of the world they don't normally get to visit.

They're especially pleased that this will be a short cruise by contemporary standards. If all goes according to plan, they'll be back home in mid-to-late July.

USS Oscar Austin returned from her last deployment in February 2013.
