NORFOLK -- A woman who was rescued and taken to the hospital following a house fire in Norfolk Friday has died of her injuries

According to Battalion Chief Julian Williamson, the 83 year-old woman passed away Saturday morning, even though her injuries were originally not considered critical.

Crews responded to the 8500 block of Devon St. around 1:45 p.m. on Friday, finding heavy smoke coming from the two-story home.

A witness told crews someone was still inside.  Firefighters quickly located the woman on the first floor and carried her from the burning structure.

Authorities said at the time that she has minor burns and smoke inhalation. She was initially treated on scene, then transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The home had non-working smoke alarms.

The home was uninhabitable.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
