VIRGINIA BEACH -- Two people are dead after a crash near Newtown Road Thursday night.

Police say the driver took the I-264 exit ramp at Newtown at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle. The car went off the road and hit a tree.

The driver died at the scene and a passenger died later at the hospital.

State police identified the driver as Jonathan R. Ward, 21, of Virginia Beach. The passenger was Christopher Mark Allen, age 20.

The accident happened just after midnight.

Police have not said whether the men were wearing seat belts or if alcohol was a factor.

As a species we just don't learn. Kids think they are invincible today even more than we did when I was a kid. I feel for the families.
