Shots fired in Beach neighborhood, schools put on lockdown as precaution

UPDATE 2:53 p.m.: Police say the man inside the residence died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Two schools in Virginia Beach were on lockdown Friday after an apparent shooting in the neighborhood.

Lynnhaven Elementary and Plaza Middle schools were on lockdown for 30 to 40 minutes, school officials told 13News Now.  The lockdown was lifted shortly after noon.

Beach police said shots were fired inside a home in the 200 block of Hospital Road around 11:45 a.m. 

Police say they heard shots fired after they arrived at the scene.  A perimeter has been established around the residence.
