CURRITUCK CO.--Two brothers face 36 charges after stealing more than 300 crab pots in the Currituck Sound and nearby waters, authorities said Monday.

Larry Wayne Jones, 45, and his brother Thomas Eldon Jones, 52, of Barco were arrested Friday.

Sgt. Brian Long with the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries said the men stole or destroyed 319 crab pots and related equipment worth $8,645.

Local crabbers said crab pot theft is a recurring problem.

Long said crabbers typically leave the square, chicken-wire traps - known as pots - sitting on the bottom of the sound and marked with small buoys. Following an early morning harvest, the pots are left unattended for hours at a time and are vulnerable to theft.

Both men bonded out of jail.
