Chesapeake fatal accident
CHESAPEAKE -- A pick-up truck driver tried to avoid a man who was lying the road early Tuesday, but he still ran over him, Chesapeake police said.
It happened around 3:45 a.m. on George Washington Highway near Townhouse Lane in the Deep Creek section.
Police say the truck was going south when he saw something in the road and swerved to avoid it. He got out of the truck and called 911, investigators said.
Authorities say Negal White, 51, died at the scene. White lived on Butler Street in Portsmouth.
George Washington Highway was closed in both directions from Townhouse Lane to South Military Highway for the investigation.
Officer Sarah E. Peedin said alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors contributing to the accident and no charges have been filed.
