VIRGINIA BEACH -- Tidewater Arts Outreach was formed in 2003 to bring arts, live music and performances to those who may not otherwise have a chance to enjoy or experience it.
the organization matches more that 200 talented visual artists, musicians, instructors and performers with 65 dependent care homes, hospitals, shelters and crisis centers throughout Hampton Roads.
29-year-old Thad Dixon has been performing twice a month at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He's autistic and has been playing piano for 19 years. He says being able to share something he loveswith others is great
"The best part is, well, sometimes I make people's day. Makes my day too," he said.
Outreach Executive Director MaryAnn Toboz says programs like this may seem simple but have positive impacts.
"An experience like this just brightens up someone's day. It might make their day. It might give them hope and some strength and courage to go on through some difficult times," she said.
Alice Goff has worked at the hospital for 25 years. She says she's seen the difference live music makes in patients lives.
"In the waiting room, you have an awful lot of people who are very nervous of course because of the test that they are getting ready to have or they have loved ones back there. I've noticed definitely when the music starts, it's just a calmness that takes over the whole area," Goff stated.
Tidewater Arts Outreach is a non-profit organization that is funded by grants, donations and special fundraisers.
Last year, more than 5,300 people were reached through 230 programs.
