SMITHFIELD -- Isle of Wight Schools says it is investigating reports of bullying against a 10th grader at Smithfield High School.

Amanda McAlpin says that last Friday another student hit her in the back of her head with a basketball during gym class causing her to lose sight in her left eye.

"My sight in both my left and my right eye, at first it was like really blurry," said McAlpin.

The sophomore says that she's been taunted and teased all year long, always verbally but never physically until now.

"Just because my size, the way I look, it's just a constant.  I'm used to it. It shouldn't be but I'm used to it."

A spokeswoman for Isle of Wight County Schools sent us an e-mail statement on the situation saying:

School administrators are continuing their investigation of the allegations and are following all school division procedures and policies.

"I.W.C.S. policy is to investigate all reports of bullying."

The division cannot comment on ongoing investigations, results of investigations, or any disciplinary measures.

Educational programs regarding appropriate student conduct take place from elementary school through high school. Additionally, we are proud to support the Smithfield High School Student Executive Committee's anti-bullying program, which initiated peer mentoring and anti-bullying pledge for students this year," said Katherine Goff, Isle of Wight County Schools.

The teen's mother said that she has repeatedly complained to the school's principal about the bullying.

"I've talked to the school. I'm like 'why can' you protect my child,'" said Tracy McAlpin.

Officers say they are still investigating the allegations against students at the school. No charges have been filed.
