UPDATE 12/21/13 5:49 PM: The scene has been cleared.

A Battalion Chief with the Newport News Fire Department confirms the suspicious package was a suitcase with protruding wires belonging to an HVAC worker.

The chief says the worker mistakenly left the suitcase when working in the area earlier.

The bomb squad used a robot to inspect the suitcase and determined it did not pose a threat.
