NORFOLK --Superintendents of Hampton Roads' school systems want Gov. Bob McDonnell to reconsider cuts to K-12 education in his budget proposal.
McDonnell on Wednesday said he plans to cut $731 million in state support to local public school divisions.
In their letter to McDonnell, the superintendents slated for them are deeper than those targeting northern Virginia schools.
They say this region stands to lose more than $115 million combined.
McDonnell's cuts represent an 11 percent funding cut in state public-education support and make up about 35 percent of the $2.1 billion he plans to trim overall to help reconcile a $4 billion, two-year budget gap.
It comes on top of more than $1.2 billion in K-12 education cuts proposed by former Gov. Timothy Kaine.
