SUFFOLK-Drivers on Route 17 in Suffolk will have to slow down in some areas starting Friday.

The city completed a speed study of the 7-mile stretch of Bridge Road and determined the entire road between Chesapeake and Isle of Wight should be one speed - 45MPH.  Currently, the speed limit varies between 45 mph and 55 mph.

“With traffic volumes continuing to rise throughout the Bridge Road corridor and with increasing development within the remaining 55 mph speed zones, safety along the corridor should be improved both because of the lower speed limits within the two existing 55 mph speed zones, but also throughout the entire corridor as the consistent speed limit will remove fluctuations in driver speeds,” city spokesperson Diana Klink said.

City crews have put up temporary signs to notify drivers of the upcoming change.
