Dec. 2010: Snowfall is one for the record books

NORFOLK -- Sunday's snowfall was the third heaviest on record for Norfolk. 

The National Weather Service says 13.4 inches had fallen at Norfolk International Airport as of 7:00 p.m. Sunday, breaking the old record of five inches in 2004.

All told, as of Sunday evening, 14.2 inches of snow had fallen at Norfolk. That number includes the snowfall amounts from Christmas night.

The most snow fell in 1892 when 18.6 inches dropped on the region on December 27 and 28; the second-most snowfall occurred February 17-19, 1989 with 15.4 inches accumulating.
