NEWPORT NEWS - A man has died after being burned in a fire in his Newport News apartment.

Officials say 56-year-old Robert Coen died this morning after being transported to Mary Immaculate Hospital.

Newport News firefighters say careless smoking sparked the fire in the unit at Sonoma Woods apartments on Monterry Place Wednesday.

Crews saw smoke but not flames when they arrived around 9:15 a.m. They ventilated one of the buildings in the complex and then started a search-and-rescue effort. That's when when they found the Coen in the bathroom and saw fire in the bedroom.

The cause of Coen's death has not been determined.

Investigators say that unit has been condemned.
