NEWPORT NEWS -- Police are investigating a shooting that took place near an elementary school in Newport News Tuesday afternoon.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 600 block of 50th Street around 3:18 p.m. Tuesday, according to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department.

When officers arrived on scene they found four individuals engaged in a confrontation. One person was detained, Eley said. Charges may be pending against them.

Investigators say one round struck the siding of a home in the 600 block of 49th Street, but no one was injured.

Newsom Park Elementary which is located just two blocks away was placed on a brief lockdown when they heard the shots. The lockdown was lifted a short time later.
