HAMPTON -- Crews have finished repairing an 18-inch sewer pipeline that broke Monday morning near NASA Langley.

HRSD crews completed the emergency repair of a failed pipe joint around 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, spokeswoman Nancy  L. Munnikhuysen told WVEC.com.

She said crews and contractors will be in the area over the next few days finalizing the repair and finishing the clean-up.

Officials say with Hampton Roads Sanitation District say they don't know what caused the pipe to break, but it didn't affect sanitary sewer service in the area.

An unknown amount of sewage spilled into ditches.   The environmental impact is unknown and our focus is now on clean-up and restoration, Munnikhuysen noted.

"When I come out here and was looking at it and got out of the truck last night, I said 'this don't smell like water,'" said David Wedding of Langley Mini-Storage.

Munnikhuysen said Langley AFB officials asked personnel to minimize their use of water during the repair period.
