CHESAPEAKE -- An SUV overturned on the High Rise Bridge in Chesapeake early Friday, forcing police to close the eastbound lanes for more than two hours.
Police were called to the bridge on I-64 that crosses the southern branch of the Elizabeth River around 2:15 a.m. A passenger in the vehicle was trapped and the driver was gone.
"We're not sure how he fled, but the driver may have jumped off the bridge to flee from officers but it was not into the water," Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police told WVEC.com.
The driver of the 1996 Chevy Blazer lost control and the vehicle flipped, she said.
The passenger's injuries are not life threatening and he's being treated at the hospital.
Chesapeake Police and Virginia State Police are searching for the driver who was last seen in the vicinity of Bainbridge Blvd.
