SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY - Someone destroyed headstones and gravesites at a family cemetery in Southampton County.

A group in the Sebrell community was so outraged that it collected $1,500 as a reward for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible.

Damage at the Butts Family Cemetery on Old Hickory Road was discovered September 29. In some cases, marble on headstones was smashed; in others, markers were pulled from the ground. In all, there was damage to nearly two dozen sites, according to the Tidewater News.

Damage to the cemetery is about $15,000, said Major Gene H. Drewery with the Southampton Co. Sheriff's Office.

Besides the $1,500 reward, Crime Line is offering up to $1,000 for information.  If you can help, call Southampton County Crime Line at 757-653-2900.
