NORFOLK – Norfolk’s Commissioner of the Revenue says she’ll work to regain the public’s trust following an investigation into possible misuse of city credit cards.
Sharon McDonald issued a statement Wednesday responding in part to criticism from Mayor Paul Fraim.
A 12-page report presented at Tuesday’s council meeting found there was no evidence of fraud, misappropriation or wrong-doing on her part.
She faced accusations of spending lavishly on lobbying trips to Richmond, which she said were important trips to secure funding for state-paid jobs in her office.
Despite the report, Fraim said McDonald broke the public trust.
"I intend to further demonstrate to Mister Fraim, our city council, our city manager and most important -- to the citizens of Norfolk, that I am worthy of their continued trust. Obviously, I must do better and I will," she said.
McDonald said she’s learned a valuable lesson and will continue to do her job, which is to make sure everyone pays their fair share of taxes.
