UPDATE 5 p.m.: The driver, 22-year-old Jaleel Yelverton, has been charged with eluding police, property damage, possession of a firearm, concealing a weapon, suspended license and reckless driving.

NORFOLK -- A pursuit ended in a crash and that's causing a traffic problem in a busy section of Norfolk.

Around 11 a.m., an officer saw a car not stopping at a stop sign near the intersection of Somme Avenue and Alsace Avenue, said Cpl. Melinda Wray, so the officer tried to stop the car.

The driver of the green Nissan refused to stop and tried to get away, violating several traffic laws during the pursuit, she added.

The officer ended the pursuit and the driver crashed about a half-mile away, hitting a power pole at Tidewater Drive and Norview Avenue.

EMS took the driver to the hospital for treatment.

North and southbound lanes in the 6200 block of Tidewater Drive was initially closed so Dominion Power personnel can make repairs.

The investigation into the incident continues and charges are pending, Cpl. Wray noted.
